Foresight Nanotech Institute Weekly News Digest: April 23, 2008Discuss these news stories at http://foresight.org/nanodot. Top Nano News of the WeekAutomated molecular evolution as a tool for nanotechnologyA major nanotechnology challenge in the development of productive nanosystems is the production of molecules to catalyze specific reactions for which no natural catalyst exists. One approach is to use theory to design enzymes, as in the milestone we cited two weeks ago. An alternative is to use molecular evolution to select a molecule with the desired properties. However, this latter approach is very labor intensive. Now lab-on-a-chip technology has been used to automate the evolution of molecules so that this approach might prove useful for nanotech purposes… In this issue:
Advancing Beneficial Nanotechnology - Join Foresight Nanotechnology researchers demonstrate concept for new computer memoryIBM scientists provided a proof-of-concept demonstration of a new type of nanotechnology-enabled computer memory in which magnetic domain walls are moved along a nanowire "racetrack"… Coaxial carbon nanotubes used to make nanotechnology cargo hauler…European nanotechnology researchers have moved a gold cargo about 500 nm along a carbon nanotube 'Monorail'. However, the cargo only moves from the center to one end, instead of from one end to the other, because the motive force is not the electric current applied to the nanotube, as intended, but rather phonons from the heat generated by the current… Artificial atoms produced using nanotechnology may form new type of computer memoryUsing nanotechnology to control the spin of a single electron in a carbon nanotube might lead to replacing conventional semiconductor transistors with a carbon nanotube or single molecule… Nanotechnology produces molecular switches that might lead to petabyte electronic memoryNow comes a report that nanotechnology using a molecular-scale switch could enable storing half a petabyte on one square inch. This nanotech advance uses a polyoxometalate (POM) molecular cluster that can be reversibly interconverted between two electronic states… —Nanodot posts by James Lewis and Christine Peterson Advancing Beneficial NanotechnologyDo you believe that nanotechnology will give society the ability to tackle the hard challenges facing humanity? What's your priority for nanotechnology: cancer treatments and longevity therapies, sustainable energy, clean water, a restored environment, space development, or "zero waste" manufacturing? Or perhaps there are potential nanotech scenarios you would like to prevent. If you would like to help influence the direction of this powerful technology, please consider becoming a member of Foresight Nanotech Institute. With your support, Foresight will continue to educate the general public on beneficial nanotechnology and what it will mean to our society. NanoMaterials08 Following the huge success of our inaugural conference which attracted over 200 delegates, NanoCentral® and IntertechPira are pleased to bring you NanoMaterials08. Taking place between 7-9 July at the Newcastle Marriott Hotel, this is the only event of its kind to focus on the commercialisation of nanomaterials. NanoMaterials08 is made up of poster sessions, workshops, exhibitions, a conference and social programme, and will feature a variety of national and international companies active in the nanomaterials revolution. With over 400 attendees expected, this event will provide excellent networking and learning opportunities, and is not to be missed. Nanotech Northern Europe 2008 Nanotech Northern Europe brings together the field's top scientists and leading international companies in order to advance the beneficial use of nanotechnology. The 2008 event concentrates around three application areas:
