Foresight Nanotechnology Challenges
Foresight has articulated six critical challenges that humanity faces which can be addressed by nanotechnology. In the Weekly News Digest we will identify news items, research breakthroughs and events citing current research and applications providing the stepping stones to solutions to these challenges.
1. Meeting global energy needs with clean solutions
Acta proprietary nanotechnology has enabled it to develop a new, unique family of catalysts called HYPERMEC catalysts which breakdown the barriers to the commercialisation of the fuel cells for mass market applications. HYPERMEC catalysts use low cost materials, work at low temperatures, enable use of cheap, safe and environmentally friendly fuels and solve other technical issues, thereby creating the possibility of producing fuel cells for consumer products. 2. Providing abundant clean water globally
Turning to tech for Clean Water
News Source: San Jose Mercury News – by Matt Marshall
"Ever heard of a Silicon Valley 'water' start-up? Didn't think so. After all, water isn't exactly high tech."

3. Increasing the health and longevity of human life
Revolutionary nanotechnology Illuminates brain cells at work
News Source: PhysOrg.com – the latest physics and technology news
Scientists at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Plant Biology and Stanford University are the first to overcome this obstacle by successfully applying genetic nanotechnology using molecular sensors to view changes in brain chemical levels. A newly published study from the scientists reveals how the nanosensors were introduced into nerve cells to measure the release of the neurotransmitter glutamate, the major brain chemical that increases nerve-cell activity in mammalian brains. http://www.carnegieinstitution.org http://www.physorg.com/news4321.html
4. Maximizing the productivity of agriculture
Nanotechnology sales increase to €687.5m in 2004
News Source: Food Production.com – study written by Helmut Kaiser
The major market trends in the food and beverage sector include improving the performance of packaging materials, prolonging shelf life, antimicrobial packaging and interactive packaging. Simple traditional packing is being replaced with multi-functional intelligent packaging methods to improve food quality thanks to the application of nanotechnology in this field, the consultancy said.
