Argues that any rational organism will have some altruistic impulses, and that any decent society must make wise use of this limited resource. The essay concludes: "It is altruism in the broad sense which can make possible a society in which people are free to peacefully pursue their own business. And it is a society in which people are free to pursue their own business which enables them to concentrate their altruistic motives in the areas in which love is really needed." |
